How much does local number portability cost? Is it different for wireless phone and home phone?

The cost of LNP varies. Some home and wireless carriers have already begun charging a "portability" service fee of same amount on your monthly phone bill, regardless of whether or not you intend to switch carriers and keep your number. This fee allows the carrier to upgrade the equipment and implement the technology that makes LNP possible.

The decision to switch carriers will probably not carry a direct fee. However, keep in mind that you may have to pay a penalty if your current wireless contract includes early termination fees. Please check with your wireless carrier for specific information as it relates to your rate plan and contract.
